Approximate Semantic Transference: A Computational Theory of Mataphors and Analogies

چکیده
In this paper we start from the assumption that in a metaphor, or an onology. same terms belonging to one domain (source domain) are used to refer to obiects other than their conventional referents belonging to a possibly different domain (target domain). We describe a formalism, which is bosed on the First Order Predicate Calculus, for representing the knowledge structure associated with a domain and then develop a theory of Constrained Semantic Transference [CST] which allows the terms and the structural relationships of the source domain to be transferred coherently across to the target domain. We show how metaphors and onalogies can be characterized in CST in such a way that many of their cognitive properties con be explained. We then propose a theory of Approximate Semantic Transference [AST] which is a computational version of CST and is derived from it by replacing the coherency requirement with approximate coherency. We show how AST can be used OS a bosis for designing models of cognitive processes involved in comprehending metaphors and analogies.

On Approximate Stationary Radial Solutions for a Class of Boundary Value Problems Arising in Epitaxial Growth Theory
In this paper, we consider a non-self-adjoint, singular, nonlinear fourth order boundary value problem which arises in the theory of epitaxial growth. It is possible to reduce the fourth order equation to a singular boundary value problem of second order given by w''-1/r w'=w^2/(2r^2 )+1/2 λ r^2. The problem depends on the parameter λ and admits multiple solutions. Therefore, it is difficult to...
متن کاملCrossBridge: Finding Analogies Using Dimensionality Reduction
We present CROSSBRIDGE, a practical algorithm for retrieving analogies in large, sparse semantic networks. Other algorithms adopt a generate-and-test approach, retrieving candidate analogies by superficial similarity of concepts, then testing them for the particular relations involved in the analogy. CROSSBRIDGE adopts a global approach. It organizes the entire knowledge space at once, as a mat...
متن کاملAnalogy-making in Situation Theory
Analogy-making is finding analogies between different situations. In this paper, we provide a new model of computational analogy-making which uses Situation Theory as its formal background. Situation Theory is a semantic and logical theory which provides a naturalistic way to represent relations in situations. The system described in this paper is aimed at solving analogy problems made by basic...
متن کاملApproximate Dynamic Analysis of Structures for Earthquake Loading Using FWT
Approximate dynamic analysis of structures is achieved by fast wavelet transform (FWT). The loads are considered as time history earthquake loads. To reduce the computational work, FWT is used by which the number of points in the earthquake record are reduced. For this purpose, the theory of wavelets together with filter banks are used. The low and high pass filters are used for the decompositi...

The aim of this paper is to study an Information Theory based learning theory for neural units endowed with adaptive activation functions. The learning theory has the target to force the neuron to approximate the input–output transference that makes it flat (uniform) the probability density function of its output or, equivalently, that maximizes the entropy of the neuron response. Then, a netwo...
